The population might be aging, but not on Twitter: according to the latest statistics, Twitter users are, on average, two years younger than they were in 2010.
Pingdom conducted an indepth study of the age and gender distribution of the top social media sites.
They found that social networkers – while usually portrayed as a younger bunch – are actually quite varied in their age.
55 percent of Twitter users, for instance, are over the age of 35, and the average age of a Twitter user is 37.3 – which is about a year older than the average of all users across the most popular 24 networks.
And Twitter has more young people than Facebook does, a finding which goes against popular assumptions. Since a similar study from Pingdom two and a half years ago, the average age of Twitter users has actually decreased by two years, while Facebook’s has increased by two years in the same time period.

And when it comes to the gender of social network users, females reign supreme. 17 of the 24 networks have more females than males.
Slashdot stands out as the most male-dominated network (87 percent males), while Pinterest – probably to no one’s surprise – has more women (79 percent females).
Twitter and Facebook both have the same gender distribution, with 40 percent of their users being make and 60 percent female.
