Twitter's Super Moment on Super Sunday

Super Bowl Sunday, at 10:07:16 p.m. ET, Twitter reached a new record for Tweets per second during a sporting event, 4,064, topping the previous mark of 3,283, during Japan’s 3-1 victory over Denmark during FIFA World Cup South Africa 2010. The all-time mark of 6,939 Tweets per second, reached just after midnight in Japan on New Year’s Eve, was never threatened, however.

Twitter added that Usher’s surprise appearance during the halftime show by the Black Eyed Peas was responsible for the second-largest spike in Tweets during the game, followed by the headline act, Slash, Eminem, Christina Aguilera, and the first player on the list, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
