TubeRank Reveals The Formula For Viral Video Success

By Megan O'Neill

So you want to make a viral video, eh?  Unfortunately, viral success is sort of like finding a needle in a haystack, but a new tool from Viral Ad Network called TubeRank is here to help you find just the right combination of emotional triggers and interests for your video to help make that haystack just a little smaller.

ReelSEO’s Chris Atkinson puts it perfectly when he says that TubeRank helps you “cook up the formula for viral success.”  Here’s how it works:  Select the quantity (none, some or loads) of specific emotional triggers, including LOL, WTF, EPIC, Moving, Topical, NSFW and Educational.  Then, choose some interests, including automotive, fashion, film, gaming, music and internet culture.  Based on your selections, TubeRank serves up a variety of viral videos, complete with insights including views, share:view ratio, dislikes:likes ratio, Twitter shares and more so you can see how well that particular combination has done for others in the past.  Results can be narrowed down to branded or user generated content.

I decided to look for a branded automotive video with loads of WTF that was very topical.

TubeRank served up this crazy BMW video of the Zurich Acapella Group singing Jingle Bells…while being raced around at high speeds.  WTF?  Yes.  Topical?  Yes.  Awesome?  I’d say so!

TubeRank’s theory is that “to create a viral video you need to think about who’s gong to share your video (i.e. The communities of interest) and why they’re going to share it (i.e. The conversation triggers).”

The company explains:

“TubeRank works by ranking videos according to their *conversational triggers* and *communities of interest*.  TubeRank’s algorithm then adds a layer of social data to each video (e.g. share / sentiment data), which, combined with trigger and interest data, provides an understanding of the viral behavior of a video i.e. Why a video’s shared, where it’s shared and how much it’s shared.

“Using this structured video data, users can use TubeRank to make specific searches to get inspiration for what triggers conversations in particular communities.  For each specific search, TubeRank provides custom benchmarking data, tips and insight to help build a fuller viral strategy, as well as a custom downloadable report to share with colleagues and clients.”

But let’s be honest here – even if you aren’t a brand looking to work on your viral strategy, TubeRank is a pretty fun way to find entertaining content based on what you’re in the mood for watching.  Check it out and let us know what you think!
