On Thursday, Toys “R”Us announced the availability of its new “Become a Sing-a-ma-jig! doll” app on Facebook which essentially allows you to superimpose a picture of your face on an image of the plush, singing doll, then post it on your wall for the world to see.
The app is housed on the “Holiday” tab of the Toys “R” Us Facebook fan page. It runs quick and is easy to use – you click on the tab, pick the doll of your choice, and then you have the option to select a photo either from Facebook or uploaded from your computer.
Once you pick a photo, hit save and you’re done. Next up you can either post the doll image to your Facebook wall, or click on a link that takes you to the Toys “R” Us site where you can purchase the product for your favorite three to five-year-old.
I think the app is a clever way to advertise – and get others to advertise for you, for free on Facebook. The only problem is, the doll looked weird with my face on it. I wasn’t sure if it was just my face that made it weird, so I made a doll for my boyfriend and that looked weird too.
It’s probably because the photo only accounts for the eye portion of the doll. The nose and mouth is already built in, so any photo I chose ended up looking off-balanced and awkward. Then again, I’m putting my face on a giant doll that sings. I shouldn’t be so picky.
The app will be available on iTunes for the iPhone an iPod touch next weekend.
Try the app now and see how your doll turns out. Who said shopping had to be boring?
