TIME’s Instagram photographer of the year is photojournalist and award winning David Guttenfelder, whose social photography stream is full of news worthy events like typhoon Haiyan to Iowa farmland to poignant images of life inside North Korea.
His work as the Associated Press chief Asia photographer demonstrates the mundane to the extraordinary, but it’s his depiction of the North Korean life that is beyond mundane, it’s both curious and bizarre. Unlike ordinary visitors, Guttenfelder has special permission to photograph and broadcast from inside North Korea using his smartphone – you can see them on his live Instagram stream.
While not many have actually traveled to North Korea, the images paint a country that’s of a different era, or a different landscape, pieced together by small images that begins to fill in a larger puzzle that seems to describe the country with just the right objects in just the right composition. Guttenfelder may not be “photographing rural America that much differently than” North Korea, but his style is just right.
