In an effort to remind people to observe Lent, the Pope will be tweeting one gospel theme or message per day for 40 days.
The Pontifical Council for Social Communications has decided that reaching the non-believers and those who have let their Lent observations slide is best done on Twitter.
The 40 days of Lent are traditionally observed by believers in a variety of ways, such as eliminating a favorite food or volunteering to help a charitable organization. However, the Vatican feels that many people, youth especially, are not observing the season of Lent in any particular way.
They’re hoping that the Pope can reach out to these secularized youth in 140-character or less.
Msgr Paul Tighe, the secretary of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, explains that the Pope’s message can indeed be distilled into bite-sized, yet still impactful, pieces:
“Many of the key Gospel ideas are readily rendered in just 140 characters. This is not the only way the Church speaks but it’s an avenue that is open to us and it’s pithy, succinct and it’s one I think that we’re quite good at.”
The Pope tweets from @Pope2YouVatican in English, Spanish, Italian, French, German and soon in Portuguese.
