Google is renowned for many, many things. It’s not known for failure.

That was always the case until the Mountain View, Calif.-based online juggernaut tried its hand at social media. It investigated Facebook to glean what Zuckerberg was doing right and where he needed some improvements.

And that was the genesis of Google+. In fact, they bragged the following in an introductory blog post:

Today, the connections between people increasingly happen online. Yet the subtlety and substance of real-world interactions are lost in the rigidness of our online tools.
