The field of 68 teams in the 2014 NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship tournament has been whittled down to 16, and the regional semifinals tip off Thursday night. The Facebook Data Science Team created a map showing which Sweet 16 team tops each state in terms of Facebook mentions since the start of the tournament.
Findings revealed by the map include:
- The University of Dayton generated the most buzz in more than one-half of the states in the U.S., due to its upset victories over Ohio State University and Syracuse University.
- The University of Michigan bested Michigan State University in the battle for their home state, while the University of Louisville beat out bitter rival the University of Kentucky for first place in their state.
- San Diego State University and Michigan State were the only Sweet 16 teams to fail to lead Facebook mentions in a single state.
