BritishIslesMapSteve Hatch, CEO of WPP Group-owned media agency MEC, joined Facebook as regional director for the U.K. and Ireland, filling a post that had been vacant for more than one year, MarketingWeek reported.

Hatch will report to Nicola Mendelsohn, vice president for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, and he will lead a staff of more than 100.

Stephen Haines had been leading U.K. operations for Facebook until June, when he was relocated to New York to assume the role of global lead for the social network’s relationship with Omnicom, according to MarketingWeek.

EMEA Regional Director James Quarles had been leading client and agency relationships in the U.K. in the interim, MarketingWeek reported.

Hatch became CEO of MEC in February 2011, and he had been with the company since it was formed as Mediaedge:cia following the merger of The Media Edge and CIA in 1998, according to MarketingWeek. Prior to MEC, he also worked with Young & Rubicam, PHD, and DDB.

Mendelsohn told MarketingWeek:

Steve brings a strong strategic approach and impressive leadership skills to Facebook. His experience will allow him to take forward the existing collaborative approach Facebook has with clients and brands to drive creative results throughout the U.K. and Ireland. We’re pleased to be welcoming him to Facebook onto the team in EMEA, and I am thrilled to be working with him again.
