The number of Facebook users in South Africa grew by 500,000 people, or 11 percent, in 2012, with a total of 4.9 million users now active on the social network, with the rapid rise in smartphone ownership fueling most of that growth.
Almost seven in ten of all internet users in South Africa (69.7 percent) are now on Facebook.
LinkedIn is the number two social network in the country, with 1.8 million users (35.3 percent penetration), narrowly ahead of third-placed Twitter (1.2 million users, 17.1 percent penetration), which has also seen rapid growth in the past twelve months.
Google+ has 460,000 users (6.54 percent penetration).
Some 20 percent of South Africans now own a smartphone, and more than 80 percent (4 million) have accessed Facebook from their mobile phones. Curiously, Nokia and Blackberry account for 87 percent of all smartphones in the country, with the iPhone controlling a share of just 3 percent.
