Sony's The Agency: Covert Ops Lets You Play Out Your Secret Agent Dreams

As the Facebook gaming industry matures, bigger brands and IP owners are taking notice and strategically venturing into the space. The latest to hit Facebook's playground is a new title called The Agency: Covert Ops is a new title by Sony Online Entertainment that lets players be a spy and engage in covert ops. Although the gameplay is reminiscent of Mafia Wars with a 007 touch, a stellar presentation, sophisticated interface and a turn based battle system attacks makes Spy: Covert Ops a great next generation strategy-based RPG. You start off by selecting a character type. An in-depth tutorial then carries you through an array of tasks including a turn-based strategy battle scene where you make meticulous choices in taking down your foe, all of which gain you influence points and cash. SOE does a good job of embellishing the game with global elements, endowing the player with a sense of international espionage. Players perform tasks like 'code breaking' and 'scouting', using up their 'cover' points which are analogous to energy in Mafia Wars. Not all jobs are point and click, like in 'code breaking', and players have to unscramble a word in a jumble-style mini game. Characters in game help players move on to the next task so they know exactly what to do. Covert Ops has a seemingly wide appeal and lets players fully customize their home base and character and other features like a black market that experiment in virtual currency sales. Overall this game has a good enough narrative and elements of fun that distinguish it from the rest of the RPGs to grow a user base over time, and with SOE's backing, we expect great things. Not many social features were found, however, although there are places where the player can request friends to assist in certain missions. This is a category SOE should focus on more as lots of high quality games begin to flood Facebook making it difficult to stand out. Other than that the game is graphically intense and should keep many casual and hardcore players alike excited for a good while.
