SongPop and The Sims Social are this week's gainer and loser among the top 25 Facebook games of August

August is beginning to wind down, which means we're now starting to look at the top half of the Top 25 Facebook games of August. The games on this section of the list contain some pretty high numbers of daily active users, so even large shifts in traffic may not do much to affect a title's standing on next month's list. Here’s what we’ve looked at so far this month: August 9, 2012: No. 25 (Top Eleven) through No. 19 (Pool Live Tour) August 16, 2012: No. 18 (Dragon City) through No. 13 (Zynga Slingo) This week, we’re looking at No. 12 through No. 7. 12. The Sims Social EA's The Sims Social is dramatically down this month, having dropped from 3 million DAU to 2.4 million. Since it launched last summer, the game peaked in September 2011 with 11.3 million DAU but has steadily been dropping off. The past couple of months, though, saw traffic beginning to grow again, thanks to a series of time-sensitive missions EA activated that require the help of players' friends (or hard currency) to complete. It seems that players are starting to get burnt out, though, based on the large user loss this month. Although a drop of 600,000 DAU is a significant change, last week showed many other games with similar traffic changes, so The Sims Social may not fall more than a few places on September's list its DAU numbers don't change. 11. SongPop FreshPlanet's SongPop continues its successful run on Facebook, up from 3.1 million DAU to 4 million. Shortly after the game launched in June, it's enjoyed strong, steady growth, thanks in large part to the publicity it received when Mark Zuckerberg started playing it. Traffic doesn't show any signs of slowing down either, so it seems likely that SongPop will be close to the top 5 games on next month's list. T9. CityVille Zynga's CityVille continues to lose traffic, down from 3.3 million DAU to 2.7 million. CityVille's user bases has been dwindling since March 2011, when it peaked at 21.3 million DAU. As of late, though, the traffic drop-off has been accelerating; since the start of 2012, the game's lost a little over 6 million DAU. Part of this is probably due to recent complaints we've heard from users about how many open quests they have because they've hit a paywall. Until this summer, the game was one of the top five games on our monthly lists. Now, CityVille looks like it will probably be knocked out of the top ten games by September. T9. CastleVille Zynga's CastleVille is also down, going from 3.3 million DAU to 3 million. The game peaked in December 2011 with 8.5 million DAU, but it's been steadily falling off since then. As a result, CastleVille's dropped by 1.7 million DAU since the start of June. Based on the drop in traffic, it looks like CastleVille may stay ahead of CastleVille, but expect to see it somewhere close to the No. 10 spot in September. 8. FarmVille FarmVille is yet another Zynga title with dwindling numbers, going from 3.4 million DAU at the start of the month to 3 million. This is a far cry from the game's February 2010 peak of 32.2 million DAU, but the game still has a healthy player base even though it's over three years old at this point. Zynga teased FarmVille 2 at its Zynga Unleashed event this summer, so it's possible FarmVille may get a traffic boost as the sequel's launch date approaches. FarmVille probably will stay in the top ten games on next month's list, but only just. 7. Diamond Dash Wooga's Diamond Dash saw a brief jump at the start of the month from 3.7 million DAU to 3.9 million, but it's dropped down to 3.4 million since. The game peaked in March with 4.7 million DAU — a point it nearly returned to in April — but the numbers have been falling off since then. In spite of the shrinking traffic, Wooga's got a potential ace up its sleeve with the upcoming launch of Diamond Dash for Android platforms (which is due to happen sometime this Autumn). Based on the traffic drop-off so many other games are going through right now, though, Diamond Dash may not actually lose much ground on next month's Top 25 list.
