By Megan O'Neill Comment

If your company or brand is new to social media, or just starting to think about creating a social media presence for yourself, then you probably have a lot of questions. Why is social media important? How can creating a presence on sites like Facebook and Twitter help increase brand awareness and ROI? How do you get started? We’ve put together a list of 7 fantastic social media videos that will take you through everything from the basics of what social media is to how it can improve your business and increase brand awareness, how other companies are using social media and more.

Social Media In Plain English

Not quite sure what social media is? If so, you aren’t alone. A lot of people aren’t quite sure what social media is and how it works, and it’s often difficult to explain to these people exactly what this popular new concept is. Common Craft put together a great video called ‘Social Media in Plain English’, which describes social media using an ice cream metaphor. Sure, the video is from 2008 and social media has changed and evolved a lot in that time. However, the video is still great for explaining the concept.

Social Media Revolution 2 (Refresh)

Now that you understand what social media is, let’s take a look at some statistics that will blow your mind. ‘Social Media Revolution 2’ is a fantastic infographic video from Socialnomics that provides a huge number of surprising statistics about social media, from the fact that 1 in 8 married couples in the United States met on social media sites, to the fact that Facebook would be the biggest country in the world if it was a country. After seeing these statistics, you’ll have no doubt about the power of social media.

Social Media ROI: Socialnomics

Socialnomics also released a great video last year about social media ROI or, in other words, the huge amount of traffic and awareness you can generate with social media for little or no money. Check it out below.

Seth Godin on the tribes we lead

American entrepreneur Seth Godin gave an interesting talk at TED about how the internet has thrown mass marketing out the window, in favor of a more social, online approach. His talk is about how social media ultimately evolved from tribes in the distant past, and the power of the ordinary person to spread ideas and values and make change. Social media is a great platform for spreading these ideas and making this change.

Clay Shirky: How social media can make history

Writer, consultant and NYU professor, Clay Shirky, also gave an interesting TED talk back in 2009 about the power of social media, specifically in shaping and influencing history. He talks about how Facebook, Twitter and text messages have helped citizens around the world (such in Iran) to spread real, uncensored news to the world. While this probably doesn’t relate specifically to your business it’s a really interesting talk that shows just how powerful social media is in spreading a message to the entire world.

Ford On Social Media

If you are thinking about implementing a social media marketing strategy to spread brand awareness online for your company, it can be helpful to see how other brands are using social media successfully. This great interview with the head of social media at Ford Motor Company, Scott Monty, is filled with great ideas and advice about creating a branded social media presence.

Old Spice Case Study

Finally, I’m sure we all heard about the Old Spice online video campaign, starting with a Super Bowl commercial and then moving into viral videos on YouTube and, finally, a fun response campaign. If you saw the campaign in action then you probably can tell that it was highly successful. However, when you see the stats in this great case study you may find that it was even more successful then you imagined. Old Spice is a huge company, and this was one of the best online video campaigns of all time. But the results should show you just how effective a good social media campaign can be in spreading awareness about your brand, increasing sales and more.
