Twitter Unveils Video-Sharing Service Vine (SocialTimes) As expected, Twitter launched its recently acquired video-tweeting service Vine on Thursday. The mobile app allows users to share six-second videos directly through Twitter. Mashable Currently only available for iOS, Vines are created by pressing and holding your finger down on the screen of your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad. You’re given six seconds of “tape” for your video masterpieces, but you can start and stop recording as many times as you’d like during that six seconds to include several scenes. ReadWrite Unlike an Instagram picture, Vine videos are happy bedfellows with Twitter cards -- you can view them in the Vine app itself or right in the midst of your Twitter stream. Interestingly, Twitter seems content to let the company live on as a standalone app, for now at least. The New York Times/Bits Blog Several users who signed up for the service on Thursday said that when they tried to use the video service, they discovered that they were logged in as another user. One user, Keith Whamond, told the technology blog AllThingsD that he was able to see another user’s private contact information, including his unlisted e-mail and telephone number. AllThingsD It’s still not clear how many users were affected, but as of 1:20 pm PDT Thursday, Vine sharing via Facebook and Twitter was back up and running, and I haven’t seen or heard any more user complaints about the issue. Still, it’s a bummer of a way to kick off a new product launch, especially one that many are calling “the future of Twitter’s video efforts.” Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg to Host Fundraiser for N.J. Gov. Chris Christie (AllFacebook) Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg will host a fundraiser for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie at his home in Palo Alto next month, BuzzFeed reported. The Pope Urges Catholics to Flock to Twitter (VentureBeat) Pope Benedict XIV may be one of Twitter’s recent and most surprising converts. Thursday, he asked Catholics to spread the word on Twitter and other social networking sites like Instagram and Tumblr to convert atheists to the faith, 140 characters at a time. French Court Orders Twitter to Reveal Identities of Those Behind Anti-Semitic Tweets (AllTwitter) We told you about Twitter’s refusal to identify users responsible for sending anti-Semitic tweets for the French government without a U.S. subpoena compelling them to do so. Well, score one for the Union of Jewish Students of France as they’ve convinced a French court to order Twitter to release this information. Researchers Link Mental Illness with Facebook Behaviors (CNET) A study from researchers at the University of Missouri found a link between social anhedonia and a decrease in Facebook activity, which suggests that therapists can use patients' Facebook profiles to better understand their mental illnesses. The study, "Social networking profile correlates of schizotypy," looked at the Facebook profiles and activities of 211 college students who were scored on their social anhedonia, perceptual aberration, and magical ideation, extraversion and paranoia tendencies. Ohio State Students Make Social Media Site Emphasizing Privacy (The Lantern) Two Ohio State University students have created a new social media website, called Capstory, which aims to create a safe place on the Internet where friends can share their pictures in complete privacy. The site was created by Suprasanna Mishra, a third-year in neuroscience, and Dustin Studer, a third-year in biomedical engineering, who were roommates their freshmen year.
