Twitter Files Transparency Lawsuit Against U.S. Government (AllTwitter) In its last transparency report Twitter noted that it was “prohibited from reporting on the actual scope of surveillance of Twitter users by the U.S. government,” and that its ability to speak freely was being restricted. Accordingly, Twitter has filed a lawsuit against the United States government that asks the federal court to declare these restrictions as unconstitutional under the First Amendment. BetaBeat Now, Twitter isn’t suing the FBI to stop the spying — they just want to be able tell people exactly what kind of spying is going on. Back in April, they wrote a Transparency Report that tells users exactly what kind of requests the government is making, and how the company is complying with them. When Twitter submitted theirs to the FBI, the FBI didn’t like the level of detail in the report, and declined to let Twitter publish it. ReadWrite In January, a group of tech companies including Facebook and Google reached an agreement with the government to share the number of requests for data in broad ranges and without differentiating between NSLs and FISA orders.
