Turkey's Twitter Ban Violates Free Speech: Constitutional Court (Reuters) Turkey's block on access to Twitter violated freedom of expression and individual rights, the constitutional court said on Wednesday, the most significant legal challenge yet to a ban which caused public uproar and international condemnation. Turkey's telecoms authority TIB blocked access to Twitter on March 21 after prime minister Tayyip Erdogan said he would "root out" the network, following a stream of anonymously posted audio tapes purporting to expose corruption in his inner circle days ahead of nationwide elections. CNN Three people filed complaints to the Constitutional Court after the Telecommunications Directorate blocked access to Twitter. The court sent its decision to the Telecommunications Directorate and the Transportation, Maritime and Communication Ministry, asking that necessary measures to restore the service be taken. At hearing the news, Twitter's global public policy team tweeted, "We welcome this Constitutional Court ruling, and hope to have Twitter access restored in Turkey soon." After 11 years in power, Turkey's strongman premier is seen by critics as increasingly authoritarian for introducing bans on the Internet and tightening his grip on the judiciary.
