At 30 Billion Pins, Pinterest Has a Fresh Take on Search — And It’s All About Mobile (Re/code) Pinterest Thursday introduced a new search feature that’s made with mobile phones and tablets in mind. It’s built to be manipulated with swipes rather than typing, and it’s based on open-ended discovery rather than finding specific things. CNET With Guided Search, a unique type of search engine unveiled Thursday and built exclusively for its mobile iOS and Android apps, Pinterest hopes it can help users not only hone in on the information you might be seeking out, but also explore new corners of Pinterest in the serendipitous spirit of the social network. Around 75 percent of Pinterest use is done through its mobile apps, while comScore puts Pinterest's most recent desktop audience at 48.2 million users. TIME You do initiate a search by beginning to type a word. As you do, Pinterest suggests terms. And then it turns your query into tags which you can delete or add to, letting you refine or broaden your search. Mashable Guided Search isn't the only way the company is hoping to identify new content for its users. Pinterest also unveiled custom categories on Thursday, meaning users can now add pins to categories that didn't previously exist. Wired Guided Search signposts a slow, gradual shift in Pinterest’s broader mission. Where it was once about collecting, Pinterest is now focused on helping people discover, even when they can’t articulate what it is exactly they’re trying to find. “To us, that’s the big unsolved problem on the Internet right now,” Silbermann says. “How do you discover things you didn’t know you were looking for?” Facebook Creates Real-Time News Wire for Journalists (The Wall Street Journal/Digits) Facebook is creating a page of real-time news for journalists called FB Newswire.
