Instagram Assures Users it Will Not Sell Their Photos (SocialTimes) Tuesday morning tech blogs and social media lit up with users reacting to changes to Instagram’s privacy policies, which some users took to give the company permission to sell user’s photographs to advertisers. Instagram has taken notice and has issued a response reassuring users that it is not claiming rights to their photos. The New York Times Kevin Systrom, a co-founder of Instagram, wrote a lengthy blog post saying the company would change the new terms of service to make clearer what would happen to users’ pictures. “We’ve heard loud and clear that many users are confused and upset about what the changes mean,” he wrote. “I’m writing this today [Tuesday] to let you know we’re listening and to commit to you that we will be doing more to answer your questions, fix any mistakes, and eliminate the confusion.” VentureBeat Some had the idea that Instagram would use people’s photos similar to the way Facebook uses profile pictures in Sponsored Stories. Instagram says it will not use photos in this manner, and it is striking the verbiage that suggests this from its terms of service. The Daily Dot To help curb the mass exodus, Instagram released a statement on Tumblr at about 5 p.m. ET, stating it will "modify specific parts of the terms to make it more clear what will happen with your photos." SocialTimes In related news, Instagram photos depicting girls alleged to be “sluts” led to a raucus protest Tuesday at a high school in Gothenburg, Sweden, according to a Swedish news report. The protesters were “throwing bottles and stones at the police and attacking passers-by and people driving past,” a police spokesman told the local press. Report: Apple Considering Local Data Deal With Foursquare (SocialTimes) Apple is in talks with Foursquare about using its local data to improve its maps application, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal. The company is reportedly talking to several local services companies in hopes of improving its poorly received maps application and integrating more local services into its mobile products. The Huffington Post According to The Street, Apple executive Eddy Cue has been using Foursquare's service recently, checking in to two locations and posting the Foursquare updates on Twitter. Cue, normally an infrequent tweeter, took over Apple's Siri and Maps as part of the company's management shakeup in October. CNET No other photo-sharing service appears to have had a policy as broad as Instagram's now-abandoned language, which claimed the perpetual right to license users' photos to companies or any other organization, including for advertising purposes, which would effectively transform the Web site into the world's largest stock photo agency. A hotel in Hawaii, for instance, could have written a check to Instagram to license photos taken at its resort and then use them for its own purposes.
