Inauguration Will Come with its Own Mobile Apps (SocialTimes) President Obama’s inauguration for a second term on Jan. 21 will be the first such event to have its own mobile app for iOS and Android. The Presidential Inaugural Committee launched the apps on Monday. USA Today The app will provide livestream video of inaugural events, including the Jan. 21 public swearing-in ceremony, and schedules for nationwide events associated with the inauguration, including the National Day of Service on Saturday. The app also features schedules of official inaugural events in Washington, blogs with news items, and it syncs with Facebook, Twitter, email and text. The Verge If you're heading to DC, the app offers comprehensive maps covering both the parade and swearing in ceremony. Food vendors, viewing screens and restroom locations are all laid out for quick reference, and the app helpfully distinguishes between ticketed areas and those where anyone can stand. Politico One point of pride for the app’s developers is that the maps — which also point out such useful sites as public toilets — will work regardless of whether the mobile device can pick up a signal. That’s an important feature because cell networks can be dodgy when too many people are using their phones at crowded events. Mashable Those who want to participate in the Inaugural Committee's National Day of Service on Jan. 19 can use the app to find volunteer events in their neighborhood. The app, produced by AT&T, is available for free download in the App Store and Google Play. Researchers Tackle the Question, is Wikipedia Biased? Facebook to Start Super-Sizing Link Previews in News Feed (AllFacebook) Facebook is apparently testing a new way for links to become more prominent in the news feed. According to sister site Inside Facebook, the link preview image will grow from 90 x 90 pixels to 154 x 154. Vimeo is Now Available in French and German (SocialTimes) Last week, Vimeo added two new languages to its repertoire — French and German. Previously, the site was available only in English and Spanish, but the video site reached out to the Vimeo community to help translate the site and make it available in the additional languages. Another First: Trading Platform Lets You Invest Using Twitter Sentiment Analysis (AllTwitter) A new trading platform launched Monday, and it claims social media sentiment can predict movement on the stock market. The Wall Street Journal reports that “the platform, called DCM Dealer, will offer retail investors the ability to trade equities, foreign exchange and commodity contracts using a real-time sentiment tool based on data produced by Twitter, Facebook and other social media channels." Kids’ eBook Consumption Has Doubled Since 2010 (AppNewser) The percent of kids in the United States who have read an eBook has almost doubled since 2010, according to a new report from Scholastic. According to the "Kids & Family Reading Report," last year 46 percent of kids have read an eBook versus 25 percent in 2010. SocialTimes However, kids say that print books are still better for bedtime stories and sharing with friends, according to the report. It’s surprising to hear that kids enjoy their privacy despite the availability of Facebook and Twitter share buttons for them to announce what they’re reading to friends.
