New Feature For Facebook iOS, Android Apps Uses Microphones to Identify Songs, TV Shows, Movies (AllFacebook) Facebook is adding a hint of Shazam to its flagship applications for iOS and Android in the form of an optional feature that allows users to use the microphones on their devices and identify songs, television shows or movies for inclusion in status updates. The social network said the feature will be made available to iOS and Android users in the U.S. “in the coming weeks.” USA Today When a user starts a status update, an audio icon pops up indicating Facebook is listening for music, TV shows or music. Once it identifies the song or program, users can choose to add that to their update. Inside Facebook If a user shares music, their friends will see a short clip of the song they’re listening to. For TV shows, it will highlight the season and the episode you’re watching. The Wall Street Journal Facebook uses the data to sell targeted advertisements. The more detailed the information it gathers from users, the more personalized — and expensive — advertising the company can sell. TIME The new feature could help Facebook attract more conversations about live television events, an area where competitor Twitter excels. The sound data gathered to identify the correct song or TV show won’t be stored by Facebook, the company says.
