Facebook Boots Two Ad Analytics Companies for Data Violations (re/code)
Facebook is punishing two ad analytics companies because it says those companies violated the social network’s data policies. Facebook is telling advertisers not to work with HasOffers and Kontagent, which tracked the performance of ads on the company’s mobile platform. GigaOM According to AdExchanger, which reported the story, Facebook relied on the companies, HasOffers and Kontagent, to help measure app installations and app-based revenue. A privacy audit revealed that they breached policies on retaining data and informing customers about app activities. Marketing Land This isn’t the first time HasOffers has run afoul of Facebook policies. In September 2013, VentureBeat reported that HasOffers acknowledged it had been distributing “non-aggregated and non-anonymized device-level data” about Facebook users to its app developer advertisers through its MobileAppTracking platform. The company issued a statement to customers saying it had updated the platform to distribute only aggregated and anonymized device-level data. Forbes Whether this is a case of Facebook doing the right thing and really cracking down on users’ safety, or simply a case of a vendor who has “gone too far,” remains to be seen. Hopefully it’s the former, although with the company needing to grow its revenue base, one can be sure that it will push things as far as it can go to attract as many advertising dollars as possible.
