Facebook Overhauls Right-Hand-Side Ads (AllFacebook)
Facebook’s right-hand-side ads are undergoing a makeover, as the social network announced in a post on its Facebook for Business page that they will more closely resemble News Feed ads. Some advertisers will begin seeing the option to run the new right-hand-side ads later this month, Facebook said, with full rollout set for later this year, and support for both formats maintained throughout the transition process. Inside Facebook Facebook announced this in a blog post: “The new look of the ads, along with their new distribution, is intended to offer a better ad experience on Facebook. In early tests we’ve seen increased engagement — up to 3X more — from people seeing the new design …” Reuters Facebook did not specify how many ads will now appear in the right-hand column, though a sample image on the blog showed a single ad in the right-hand column. The company previously displayed as many as seven box-like display ads in the right hand column. CNET “Think belly fat and miracle weight-loss [ads],” said Altimeter digital advertising and media analyst Rebecca Lieb. “Fewer, larger, more visual ads are more noticeable and arresting.” Ad Age Data from Facebook ads partner company AdParlor bears out the swift migration of ad dollars from right rail to News Feed over the last three quarters. Right rail-specific placement accounted for 27.2 percent of Facebook spend managed by the company in the third quarter of 2013; that had dwindled to 8.1 percent during the first quarter of 2014.
