Apple Drops YouTube as Pre-Loaded App in iOS 6 (USA Today) Apple has eliminated Google's YouTube as a pre-loaded app on its mobile devices as the battle for users escalates between the two technology giants. "Customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser, and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be on the App Store," said Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller. The New York Times/Bits Blog In response, YouTube issued a statement: “We are working with Apple to ensure we have the best possible YouTube experience for iOS users.” The extent of Google’s disappointment in Apple’s move was unclear. The Verge Google will have a lot more flexibility with a standalone YouTube app. Apple, on the other hand, no longer has to pay whatever license fee may have existed for including YouTube in iOS. Reuters Analysts believe Google generates a significant portion of mobile advertising revenue from iPhone users. Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt once sat on Apple's board of directors, but the relationship between the two companies has frayed. TechCrunch YouTube was one of the first apps to be available on the iPhone when it was released, and has come pre-loaded on all iOS devices over the last five years. Of course, when it first came out, the world was a different place.
