While you can upload any shape image up to 5MB in size, Twitter recommends dimensions of 1252 x 626 pixels. But here’s the thing: whatever you upload will be re-sized to 520 x 260 pixels, so it needs to look good at those specs, too, and not just at your original scale and shape.
