The 2014 Sochi Winter Olympic Games came to a stunning conclusion on Sunday with a breathtaking closing ceremony at Fisht Stadium. While never quite reaching the heights of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, Sochi has generated huge levels of buzz on Twitter over the past two weeks, with ice hockey in particular producing some heavy tweets per minute (TPM) turnover.
Indeed, the USA’s ice hockey shootout victory over Russia became the single-most tweeted-about event of the Games with an eye-opening 72,630 TPM count. Canada’s gold medal-winning ice hockey run also got the fans fired up.
Despite finishing without a medal Japan’s Mao Asada was the most talked-about athlete on Twitter throughout Sochi, with South Korea’s Yuna Kim finishing second.
Per million population, South Korea tweeted about Sochi more than any other country, with Russia, Japan, the Netherlands and Canada rounding out the top five.
