Smosh Surpasses RWJ To Become Most Subscribed YouTube Channel

By Megan O'Neill

For the past year and a half, since June of 2011, Ray William Johnson has reigned supreme as the most-subscribed-to YouTuber.  However, as of this weekend the torch has been handed off to Smosh, the YouTube comedy duo, Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox.

Over the weekend Padilla tweeted, “Most subscribed on YouTube!? Someone needs to slap me, I think I’m dreaming.”  The tweet has accrued 1,638 favorites and 1,335 retweets so far.

Smosh currently has 6,821,581 subscribers and just over 2 billion video views.  Ray William Johnson is just slightly behind Smosh with 6,809,178 subscribers.  RWJ does, however, have more video views than Smosh, clocking in at 2.1 billion.

Smosh has been a household name on YouTube for nearly as long as YouTube has existed.  Padilla and Hecox began uploading videos to the site in 2005 and gained recognition early on when they uploaded a video of themselves lip synching to the Pokemon theme in November 2005.  Today the comedy duo releases a regular schedule of videos each week, ranging from comedy to gaming.
