Small Businesses Still Treading Water on Social Networks

Adoption of Internet technologies lags among small businesses, driving fierce competition for their loyalty among tech companies. The issue is largely one of time: Small business owners struggle to find the time to manage their online presences and keep up with best practices.

Vertical Response, an email communications provider geared toward small businesses, conducted a survey of 500 small business owners to learn about their online habits.

Two-thirds of small business owners are using social media more this year than they did last, the company found. Nearly half spend six or more hours a week using social media; a third would rather spend less time. The so-called SMB constituency has yet to discover second-wave social networks: 90 percent use Facebook and 70 percent use Twitter, but just a quarter use Pinterest and a third use Google+.
