Simon Cowell says that YouTube “has literally changed the music business for the good,” and he’s tapping into YouTube in a major way with The You Generation, the world’s first global audition channel on YouTube.
The You Generation officially launches this Wednesday, March 20, and, according to Virgin Media, an official statement from Cowell’s record label, Syco, said, “The channel offers people with unconventional and original talents the opportunity to become the next internet star.” Virgin Media reports that, “Simon is hoping to find a singer who can match the popularity of YouTube sensation Justin Bieber.” The channel will host auditions every two weeks in different talent categories. Results will be broadcast in 15 languages and 26 countries.
In an interview posted earlier today on The You Generation channel, Simon Cowell explains, “We wanted to devise a way that it’s easier for you to get noticed. It’s a simple idea, you upload your videos—it goes way beyond singers or dancers or the kind of stuff we’ve done before—and all of the resources I have here, or we have at Sony, are behind it so, if you’re good you’re going to get noticed and you’re going to get discovered.”
These days, countless talented individuals are being noticed on YouTube but there’s a problem when it comes to being discovered—with over 72 hours of video being uploaded to YouTube every minute, it’s easy to get lost in the crowd. The You Generation aims to solve this problem and Simon says, “you are definitely going to get seen on this.”
This Wednesday at 7pm GMT The You Generation will be launching with a live performance by One Direction.
