Home Sweet Home: COO Sheryl Sandberg’s New Digs Share Many Features Of Facebook’s HQ Expansion

It may not have been designed by Frank Gehry, but the new home of Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg and her family shares many characteristics with the social network’s upcoming West Campus expansion of its headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif. U.K. newspaper The Daily Mail provided an extensive look at Sandberg’s new digs, also located in Menlo Park. Like Facebook’s new facility, the new home includes a “living roof” with solar panels and grass, and the majority of its living space is hidden underground in the basement. Other features of the new home, as reported by The Daily Mail, include: 9,210 square feet. A waterfall. A large great room where Sandberg can host her Silicon Valley dinner parties. Sparkling lights illuminating the house number. A large garage, as well as several outdoor parking spots. Second-floor bedrooms with large windows that face a leafy road. The basement features a wine room, a gym, a movie theater, an office, and a guest bedroom. The Daily Mail reported that some residents were unhappy with the fact that the new home’s ultra-modern look is in stark contrast with the area’s more traditional homes. Alain Pinel Realtor Judy Citron, who recently sold a house four doors away for $3.76 million, estimated that Sandberg’s new property could be worth around $11 million following all of the renovations, and she told The Daily Mail: It’s one of the most charming streets in Menlo Park. The lots are big -- so commands an affluent community. It’s a meandering street with a lot of character. There are grand oaks and lots of vegetation. And it’s within walking distance to downtown, and lots don’t come up very often. I think it sends a message that she wants to be part of the local community, and that's a good thing for Facebook's reputation. Menlo Park assistant planner Kyle Perata told the newspaper: It’s a very memorable place. There’s a large basement, and a first and second floor. The basement has a falling waterfall feature in a sunken patio with a light well. Water falls down the top of the wall down into a pool. Menlo Park Building Official Ron LaFrance added: It’s a pretty impressive property. It’s a beautiful house. The contractors did a gorgeous job. The attention to detail is really impressive. I hadn’t seen the living roofs or water features on a residential property -- a lot of the features you would normally see in a commercial property. It’s one of the most impressive houses I’ve seen, and one of the biggest properties I’ve seen in the area. And area realtor Keri Nicholas told The Daily Mail: Facebook put us on the map. We’re almost like New York: Everyone wants to be here, and we have finance companies and venture capitalists. But we have no more land -- and we were expensive before Facebook came here. We have a community. You don’t want to be behind gates. And although this area is very traditional, we have a lot of Apple employees, as well, and they prefer a more modern design.
