Sharp To Enter eBook Market

The Sharp Corporation announced today a new version of its XDMF eBook formatting functionality, which will include the ability to embed video and audio content into an eBook. Sharp plans to release this “next-generation eBook format” sometime this year.

Sharp also plans to build digital eBook distribution platform and launch compatible eReader devices later this year.

The current XMDF format, which launched in 2001, is software for formatting eBooks with text and images. Various Japanese publishers are already using the software and will be using the upgraded version when it is released.
