Report: Feds Do Virtually Nothing to Combat Spam

U.S. federal and state law enforcement authorities aren’t doing much to fend off excessive spam and phishing schemes, in what has become a multi-billion-dollar problem, Reuters reports.

In the 20 states that actually gave the Center for American Progress useful data—apparently the other 30 weren’t capable of this for some reason—20,000 complaints were received during the course of 2007. The report said that eight states put Internet-related complaints among their “top-three consumer headaches” in 2007, while 24 states listed some kind of online fraud in their top 10 complaints.
