Rapper "The Game" Tweets Prank Phone Number, His Followers Overwhelm LAPD Phone Lines

Rapper "The Game" tweeted the LAPD's phone number last night, claiming it was a number for his followers to call to get a shot at becoming his intern, and causing a mini-flash mob of callers to overwhelm the LAPD's phone lines for several hours. Funny prank? The LAPD didn't think so, and has filed a criminal complaint against The Game. As PCMag.com reports, The Game tweeted that he was looking for an intern on Friday evening, and included a phone number for anyone interested. And his more than 580,000 followers took him seriously. Very seriously. They called that number for at least 2 hours straight, wanting to know more about the internship and how they could apply. The problem was, the number didn't lead to The Game or someone doing recruiting on his behalf - it lead to the Compton Sheriff's Office. The LAPD has to issue a statement to respond to the prank, describing it as: Between 5:30pm PT and about 8pm, the Sheriff's station received "hundreds of phone calls" causing "all of the many phone lines [to be] overwhelmed." Some actual repercussions occurred, too. There were delays in reaching out to people in need and attending crime scenes, including finding a missing person, a spousal assault, a stolen car and two robberies. When the department had traced the source of all of the hang-ups and internship inquiries, they acted quickly: they sent two tweets requesting that The Game remove their phone number from his account, but received no response. The number has since been removed. The LAPD has filed a criminal complaint against The Game, consisting of: "Annoying or harassing phone calls via electronic device or the internet whether or not conversation ensues, Delaying or obstructing peace officers in the performance of their duties, [and] Person who knowingly and maliciously disrupts or impedes communications over a public safety radio frequency." For his own part, The Game doesn't seem to be phased by the criminal filings, nor show any remorse in tying up the LAPD's phone lines. He questioned the LAPD about being able to track down a tweet but not being able to solve murders: "Yall can track a tweet down but cant solve murders ! Dat was an accident but maybe now yall can actually do yall job !!!! #iSpeak4ThePeople" And he tweeted about how ridiculous he thought the criminal charges were on Sunday: "I can see it now: "What u in 4 homie.. robbery. What about u dog... Murder. Aye... What u in here 4 game... (Pokes Chest Out) A TWEET" !!!" As PCMag.com speculates, this could all just be a big publicity stunt, as The Game's new album will be in stores on August 23rd - which does explain his nonchalant attitude towards the whole thing.
