Google has announced that its advertising platform, Google AdSense, has grown to reach 2 million publishers worldwide since it was introduced ten years ago. These publishers have earned more than $7 billion from AdSense in the last year alone.
In a Google+ hangout, Susan Wojcicki, SVP of advertising and commerce at Google, said that Google AdSense was designed to solve the problem, “how do we enable publishers all over the world to be able to use our monetization to be able to build a business?”
AdSense helps publishers monetize their blog posts, videos, games, and other content through targeted ads that reach specific audiences for the advertiser and serve related results to the end user. Google gives publishers a cut of advertising dollars on a pay-per-click or pay-per-view basis. The company sends out an average of 100,000 checks every month.
“The amazing thing about technology is that you can have a pretty small team and you can put it up on the web and then people all over the world can find it and can use it,” Wojcicki said of AdSense in its early days. But it took “many, many people to get to where we are right now.”
The last ten years have also brought mobile and video options to the space. In the future, said Wojcicki, “Wherever people can create content, wherever users are going, we want to be able to enable a monetization solution.”
