On average, some 40 percent of Facebook accounts claiming to represent Fortune 100 brands are unauthorized, according to new research from security-as-a-service provider Proofpoint.

Proofpoint also found that:

  • The three main categories of security threats to Fortune 100 brands are unauthorized accounts, social account compromises and harmful content.
  • 20 percent of Twitter accounts claiming to represent Fortune 100 brands are unauthorized.
  • Fortune 100 brands experience at least one compromise on their social media channels on every business day.
  • Social media spam has increased sevenfold since mid-2013.
