Pinterest edged past Tumblr in unique visitors for the first time in August, according to Compete analytics. Although Pinterest has grown faster than any other social network in recent months, as a relative newcomer, it has continued to have fewer visitors.
Like Pinterest, Tumblr tailors its user experience towards image-sharing and re-sharing posts or images authored by others. Tumblr was founded in 2007. Pinterest launched in 2010, but saw its user base skyrocket in late 2011 and early 2012.
Paradoxically, Tumblr appeals to a younger audience, Compete’s numbers show. Pinterest users are also more affluent than those of any other social network besides LinkedIn, according to a recent ComScore report.
As SocialTimes has reported, e-commerce sites have endeavored to mimic Pinterest’s user experience while linking it more directly to online transactions.
