The nearly 300 Starbucks owned stores in New York City and Long Island are now accepting payment using barcodes displayed by the BlackBerry and iPhone apps. Why just the BlackBerry and iPhone? 71% of smartphones that connect to WiFi at Starbucks are those two phones brands.

As Starbucks CIO, Stephen Gillett, noted in a tweet, this service is already available in some stores in Seattle and the San Francisco bay area as well as Starbucks located in Target stores.
