PageData: Baseball Rivals Do Battle On Facebook

Major League Baseball recently had its geographical rivalry week, where teams played interleague series against their closest foes. The New York Yankees took on the New York Mets, and the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim battled it out, as did the Oakland A's and San Francisco Giants. We know how the teams did on the field, but who won the rivalry battles on Facebook? We dug through PageData numbers to find out. Chicago Cubs vs. Chicago White Sox The Cubs, who play in the ninth-most-checked-in U.S. place on Facebook (Wrigley Field), won three out of four from the White Sox (one game was postponed due to rain). The Cubs also dominated the Facebook matchup, with more fans, more new fans, and a higher people talking about this metric. These two teams are just 10 miles apart — the closest of any baseball rivalry. The Cubs added the most new fans May 28, the day of the rainout. The White Sox got the most likes during the series May 29, when they lost 9-3. Both teams actually took a dip in PTAT during the series, with the White Sox experiencing a loss of more than 8,000 May 28. New York Yankees vs. New York Mets In what is called the Subway Series, the Mets did something they had never done — sweep the Yankees. The Yankees, who play in the Bronx, fell in four straight games to the Mets from Flushing. However, the Yankees (who are Facebook's most popular baseball team) swept their crosstown rivals on Facebook. The Mets gained their most fans of the week the day after the sweep, but the series didn't really move the needle on the team's PTAT. The Yankees, however, suffered a huge drop (94,175) in that metric May 29 to 30 — the final two days of the series. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim vs. Los Angeles Dodgers The Dodgers and Angels split their four-game series, but the Dodgers are easily more favored on Facebook. The Dodgers added the most fans of the series May 29, the day they lost 4-3 to their rivals from Anaheim. The Angels outliked the Dodgers only once that week — the day after the series. Both teams saw PTAT rise during the series, with the Dodgers earning roughly an 8,000 increase May 29. The Angels nearly doubled PTAT on that day, going from 24,971 to 47,299. San Francisco Giants vs. Oakland Athletics In the baseball rivalry located closest to Facebook's Menlo Park, Calif., headquarters, the Athletics took three out of four games from the Giants, the club with the fourth-most likes of any MLB team on Facebook. The Giants also play in AT&T Park, the third-most-checked-in place on Facebook. Although the Giants have many more fans, the Athletics gained the most fans over the past week. However, San Francisco trumped Oakland in the PTAT metric. San Francisco gained the most likes of the series on the first day, when the team lost 4-1 to Oakland. The three days after that, the A's gained more fans with each game. The Giants' PTAT metric fell by roughly 22,000 after the first game, and stayed around that same level throughout the series. The A's saw a PTAT dip of about 6,000 May 29, when they won the third straight game over their cross-bay rivals.
