Ouch: NBA Fines Miami Heat Owner $500,000 For Tweeting About The Lockout

The NBA is very, very serious about their "no talking" rule during this season's lockout. Miami Heat owner Micky Arison was fined a massive $500,000 on Monday for using his Twitter account to discuss details of the lockout. It only took the NBA the weekend to determine Arison's fate. The owner had spent Friday tweeting about the lockout, a session which earned him a fine five time greater than any the NBA had previously given out during this lockout. As ESPN reports, several sources confirmed the amount of the fine, although no official announcement was made. Apparently, several owners of other teams had lobbied NBA commissioner David Stern to dispense the fine. Here are a few of the tweet exchanges made by Arison on Friday (all of which have now been deleted from his Twitter account): From a follower: "How's it feel to be apart of ruining the best game in the world? NBA owners/players don't give a damn about fans&and guess what? Fans provide all the money you're fighting over&you greedy (expletive) pigs." Arison's reply: "You are barking at the wrong owner." The follower followed-up: "Then can you bark at the other owners? This is RIDICULOUS!!!" To which he replied: "Now u r making some sense." And when asked what he thought about Clippers' owner Donald Sterling, Arison replied: "lol". Although it's not clear whether one or all of Arison's tweets on Friday were the catalyst for his fine, it's clear that he violated the NBA's mandate that neither the players, nor the owners and coaches could discuss details of the lockout publicly. The NBA had announced in July that coaches could be fined up to $1 million for replying to or retweeting a player during the lockout.
