I mentioned in that post that, for me anyway, comedy is about speaking truth to power and going after those who deserve it. It really shouldn’t be wielded as a weapon against anyone else … unless whatever you’re doing is really funny. What can I say? It’s a strange business. But I also mentioned that although TED certainly does deserve some roasting, there are better ways to do it than by ruining an event put on by a bunch of (mostly) well-intentioned college students.
So, here we are with comedian Patton Oswalt taking TED down a couple of notches on Conan. And for those of you who don’t know, Patton is pretty great to follow on Twitter, and he’s absolutely right about everything he said about Salon. The latter point has nothing to do with anything. I’ve just been waiting for an excuse to show people how awesome that takedown of Salon is from him. (Actually, it has a lot to do with everything we’ve been talking about on this site involving lazy journalists just trying to drive up page views by manufacturing controversy, but we’ll get to that some other time.)
I hope the lesson here is clear: If you’re going to troll, do it well, and troll someone who deserves it.
