President Barack Obama and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney are asking their Facebook supporters to donate to the American Red Cross as states along the East Coast brace for Hurricane Sandy. The presidential candidates have essentially halted most political activity until the hurricane passes by the East Coast.

Obama urged people to support disaster relief efforts online, while Romney provided followers with the option of texting “REDCROSS” to 90999 via mobile devices.

Politicos are speculating that the election season may be officially over with the arrival of Hurricane Sandy, so it will be interesting to see how the campaigns leverage social media to mobilize supporters in the affected states, and what kinds of messages they communicate in the storm’s aftermath.
