NPR, WSJ Trash the Flash for iPad Sites

Trash the Flash? That’s what National Public Radio and The Wall Street Journal are doing in the process of launching customized sites for the Apple iPad, which is set to debut next month, ReadWriteWeb reported.

The two sites will automatically detect when they are being accessed via the Apple tablet and guide users to customized versions without Adobe Flash technology, which is not supported by the iPad, according to ReadWriteWeb.

AllThingsD reports that NPR is removing all traces of Flash, which is not an easy task, since the Flash-based audio player is a key feature on its traditional Website, and NPR Digital Media senior vice president and general manager Kinsey Wilson told Poynter its developers would use an HTML5-based player instead.

As for the Journal, Flash features aren’t being converted, according to ReadWriteWeb, meaning users will encounter the “blue box” symbol that appears when Flash content cannot be supported.
