The birthday notification has been a mainstay of the top right corner of your Facebook page for years. Soon, another type of notification will join it — one for weddings and engagements. Facebook introduced this new feature Thursday, which allows you to write a quick “Congratulations!” on a newly wedded or engaged friend’s timeline, much like you would on their birthday.
If none of your friends has plans to tie the knot anytime soon, here’s what it looks like, courtesy of Venture Beat:
While it will show up in the top right corner of your news feed, engagements and weddings don’t show up on the revamped events page (yet). If you’re not friends with your buddy’s significant other, this also gives you the opportunity to add them.
If you don’t have this feature, just wait. Facebook is rolling it out to all members, according to The Next Web.
A Facebook spokesperson described to The Next Web why the company is highlighting weddings and engagements:
Facebook has become a unique way people share and congratulate friends around exciting life events such as engagements and weddings or the arrival of a child. To make it easier to keep up with these momentous occasions and to ensure you can share in your friends’ joy, we are rolling out a “Weddings and Celebrations” feature. Beginning today, special events starting with engagements and weddings will be displayed along with friends’ birthdays when you log into Facebook.
Whenever someone changes their relationship status to married or engaged, it will set off the notification. However, writing “Congrats!” or “Wait, really?” probably won’t get you off the hook for buying a wedding present.
