As Greg Galant, cofounder and executive producer of the Shorty Awards, told Mashable, “Awarding excellence on a medium that changes every year is like living on the Galapagos Islands — it requires constant evolution.”
As such, this year’s Shorty Awards – the 6th annual, for which nominations are officially open – is bigger and better than ever.
For the first time, awards will be given for specific content pieces:
GIF of the Year
Instagram Video of the Year
Kickstarter of the Year
Newsworthy Photo of the Year
Tumblr of the Year
Amazon Review of the Year
Meme of the Year
Selfie of the Year
Vine of the Year
Those are in addition to awards for best comedian on social media, most green person or account on social media, podcaster of the year and many, many more. Anyone can also create a new Shorty Awards category by tweeting a nomination with a new hashtag.
As always, you cast votes using nominees’ Twitter handle and the category-specific hashtag, either straight from the Shorty Awards website via the voting form or else just through Twitter.
Nominees with the most nominations, along with the selections of the Nominating Board, will become finalists. Winners will be chosen by The Academy of Short-Form Arts & Sciences, including Charlie Sheen, Alyssa Milano, Reddit cofounder Alexis Ohanian, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley and more. There’s also a separate vertical for brands and agencies, for which the entry fee is $399 per category.
