Nokia Needs to Choose a Mobile Platform & Stick with it: S60, Maemo, Symbian^3, MeeGo. What's Next?

If you’re not an expert on Nokia smartphones, you probably have a headache from trying to follow their platform strategy over the past 18 months. Here’s the latest addition to that story from Engadget:

Nokia N8 to be final Symbian N Series device, all MeeGo from here on out

So, what has Nokia’s mobile platform strategy looked like for the past 18 months?

– Nokia N97 based on Symbian S60
– Nokia N900 based on Maemo (a Linux deritive)
– Nokia N8 based on Symbian^3
– Next Nokia smartphone to be based on MeeGo (the result of merging the Maemo project with Intel’s Moblin project)

Will MeeGo actually be Nokia’s mobile platform of choice for high-end smartphones going forward? Let’s wait another couple of months before we start to believe that.
