Nielsen Wire has really been looking hard at the mobile world. The latest report used on-device meters to determine which apps were used in a 30-day period. Their measurement techniques provided insight into overall use as well as separating app use by men and women.
Top 20 Android Apps in the US: Women Like Facebook, Men Love Maps and Mail
Overall social network app use on Android phones ranked this way:
1. Facebook – 73.5%
2. Twitter – 14.9%
3. Google+ – 11.8%
More people played Words With Friends on Android phones (16%) than used Twitter.
Men seem to prefer Google+ to Twitter on Android phones, however.
1. Facebook – 66.9%
2. Google+ – 15.9%
3. Twitter – 13.4%
Women social network app preference was similar to the overall ranking:
1. Facebook – 81%
2. Twitter – 16.5%
3. Google+ – 7.2%
You can see, however, that significantly more women used Facebook in a 30-day period (its “active reach”) than men did.
On a non-social note, the Advanced Task Killer App is a relatively heavily used app (26.1% active reach) for a device that is supposed to perform memory management automatically. In fact, the task killer app was used more that Angry Birds (25.9%).
