Newspapers Begin Erecting Paywalls in Response to Google One Pass

Google’s announcement Wednesday of its Google One Pass payment system for content led two newspaper owners to begin laying the foundations for paywalls.

Media General will use Google One Pass to charge for online content from its Richmond Times-Dispatch, while Rust Communications will deploy that strategy at one of its 19 daily and 30 weekly newspapers next month, adding two more soon thereafter, paidContent reported.

Raymond Kozakewicz, a spokesman for Media General, told paidContent the Times-Dispatch would have a paywall within three months and, after assessing its performance under the Google One Pass system, the company would consider similar measures at its other newspapers.
