Bloggers shared the most news links about the labor unrest in Wisconsin, while Apple was the most-Tweeted news subject, and the most-watched news and politics video on YouTube was two Australian news anchors sharing an awkward moment, according to the Pew Research Center’s Project for Excellence in Journalism’s New Media Index for the week of Feb. 21-25.
Wisconsin accounted for 25 percent of news links shared by bloggers, and it was followed by: more unrest, this time in Libya, at 12 percent; a BBC report about American scientists who claim that monkeys have the ability to express self-doubt and uncertainty, also at 12 percent; reports that the administration of President Barack Obama would no longer defend the Defense of Marriage Act, at 8 percent; and an op-ed in the Los Angeles Times about the myth of “greedy geezers” who are supposedly bankrupting the nation, at 7 percent.
Apple accounted for 18 percent of links shared via Twitter, including two Mashable posts: one on paintings created on the iPhone and iPad, and the other on free personal-finance iPhone apps. The most-admired company was followed by: Libya at 13 percent; another Mashable post about Carlos Garcia, who started Living Philanthropic, at 7 percent; second-most-admired company Google at 6 percent; and a TechCrunch report on the conflict between Twitter and UberMedia, also at 6 percent.
The Australian awkwardness was followed on the list of most-viewed news and politics videos on YouTube by: protestors in Bahrain supposedly shot and killed by the country’s army; two since-removed videos featuring Italian actor Roberto Benigni; and a magician performing on a Turkish talent show.
