Netflix for Android: Coming, But Not Soon, & Then Only for Some Devices

iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, and Windows Phone 7 mobile devices can all let you watch TV shows and movies on Netflix apps. But, if you have one of the hottest selling mobile platforms around, Android OS, you cannot. And, based on this item on the official Netflix blog, it doesn’t sound like it will be available anytime soon. And, when it does appear, it will only be available for specific Android devices.

Here’s what Netflix’s Greg Peters wrote:

– The hurdle has been the lack of a generic and complete platform security and content protection mechanism available for Android

– Although we don’t have a common platform security mechanism and DRM, we are able to work with individual handset manufacturers to add content protection to their devices

– I’m happy to announce we’ll launch select Android devices that will instantly stream from Netflix early next year
