Netflix Rolls Out Facebook Integration For U.S. Members

By Megan O'Neill

Late last year, Netflix announced that it would be introducing social features for U.S. users in 2013.  The day has arrived and Cameron Johnson, director of product innovation at Netflix, writes on the Netflix blog, “Starting today, Netflix members in the U.S. can share their favorite shows and movies on Netflix with friends by connecting to Facebook and agreeing to share.”

With Netflix Social, once you connect your Facebook account you’ll have two new social rows of titles added to your Netflix homepage—Friends’ Favorites (list of titles your friends have rated with 4 or 5 stars) and Watched By Your Friends (a list of your Facebook friends’ most recently-watched titles).

Note that by default sharing happens only on Netflix and not on Facebook itself.  You can share your activity on Facebook by turning ‘Share my activity on Facebook’ on in the social settings.

Additionally, Johnson reports that, “You are in control of what gets shared.  You can choose not to share a specific title by clicking the ‘Don’t Share This’ button in the player,” and un-share titles which have previously been shared.

If you are a Netflix member in the U.S. and don’t see the social features yet, you should be seeing them over the next couple of days.  Johnson reports that “all U.S. Netflix members will have access to the social features by the end of the week.”
