Police arrested a 23-year-old convicted sex offender for having a Facebook account, which is illegal in North Carolina and also a violation of the social network’s rules.

Marcus Andrew Dorsey (pictured) of Claremont, N.C. had been convicted of “indecent liberties” with a child back in August of 2008, according to the Hickory Record.

At the time of his arrest, a state law passed which makes it illegal for registered sex offenders to use commercial social networking websites, “where the sex offender knows that the site permits minor children to become members, or to create or maintain personal web pages on the commercial social networking website,” said the newspaper.

The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, where Dorsey is registered as a sex offender, conducts routine sweeps of social networking sites to determine, if any of these types of predators maintain accounts on them.
